One of my earliest memories as a “Saffa” is gazing at the marvel that is The Marula tree — the grandeur and life it gives to all living things within the African bush. Native to Southern Africa, it is one of Africa’s greatest treasures.

Marula trees, just like human beings, require a battalion of other living organisms to continue to grow and flourish, and I have only gotten to the position I am in my life with an army of people.

My roots, are deeply embedded in South African soil. But like a tree, I need to branch out, develop my own colour and go through my own seasons of life.

The grounding energy I have been given I owe all to the beginnings of my life — my family, schooling and most recently a degree in Marketing. The nourishment and nutrients I was given have all moulded me into who I am today.

Locals ferment and distill the Marula fruit to produce one of South Africa’s most noteworthy exports — Amarula.

The Amarula drink was made under the African sun by locals for its original purpose to be enjoyed by the indigenous people, however, it is now found and enjoyed in all corners of the world. My branches too are starting to stretch and bend, taking me on my own adventures — being the new visitor on Aussie land.

Embarking on this internship abroad with www.techwitty.com.au has truly been the best of both worlds! There are only a few times in life where one has the opportunity to travel the world while gaining professional work experience.

Whilst being in Australia, I’ve gained valuable vital work experience as well as the ability to explore what this foreign land has to offer. I’ve come out with a better understanding of what I want to ultimately do. I am fresh out of University from the small town of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the idea of an internship was so thrilling. My internship with Techwitty has provided me with a short-term experience of the career I want, as well as help me establish the steps that are needed to take me there.

Marula trees stand sturdy and are impenetrable most of the time, yet they can flex and sway with the wind when needed.

Before embarking on this journey, I felt like a leaf about to fall — shaky and vulnerable. Now that I have allowed myself to fall from the tree, being carried by the wind underneath me, I have a new-found confidence within myself. I have learnt what true independence is, and I have grown personally and professionally.

My internship with Techwitty has motivated me to challenge myself and work harder than I thought possible — I know what I have been doing is making an impact on the company and that my presence is valued.

My purpose in life is to make a positive impact, wherever that may be, and the fact that I am leaving footprints embedded around the world in different soils means that I am living out that purpose.

Through close mentoring at Techwitty, I have a whole new understanding of the Digital Marketing landscape. Being involved in planning Christmas events, writing blog posts, been shown the ins and outs of the technologies utilised behind the scenes of social media platforms, sitting in on meetings with clients and being taken through Techwitty’s product and service offerings has been incredibly beneficial to the way I now see this field.

Before arriving, I couldn’t comprehend how complex the world of “Inbound Marketing” was, and before I knew it I was writing all about it. So, the leaves at the end of my branches are developing their own colour, every bit of information or insight into the minds of today’s leaders is enriching and blending my colours uniquely.

Marula trees go through cycles of growth, shedding of leaves, re-flowering, they are a dense canopy that oozes and throbs with life.

The magic of nature that trees embody is that they live for hundreds (or even thousands) of years, we revere them as keepers of the past and sentinels of the future.

“Someone is sitting in the shade today, because someone planted a tree a long time ago”. I can only hope that the seeds I’m leaving behind, as I go back to my roots, will have as big of an impact on Techwitty that the impact Techwitty has left on me.

I have Techwitty, and Kevin O’Hara — CIO of Tulla Private Equity Group and CEO of Techwitty, to thank for being the breeze I needed. As my branches stretch out across the globe, my leaves are being blown onto new great adventures around the world.

Techwitty is a living breathing organism, that gives life to processes, people, and development. The company has evolved in the last two years at a staggering rate — and the fact that I even got a small glimpse into the beautiful workings of this company has been life changing for me. The lessons I’ve learnt from the people along this journey have made an astounding impact on my life, I will always be grateful to Techwitty for this unforgettable and enriching experience.

This visitor is being shipped off home again, only this time I am returning with a filler, and wholesome understanding of the mystifying Digital Marketing world.

My roots are deeply embedded in South African soil, but who knows where the wind will blow me to next.
